How the minimum works

The CRA minimum is your RRIF's fair market value on January 1 times the prescribed factor for your age. Under 71, the factor is 1 divided by (90 minus your age). At 71 and over, the factor comes straight from the CRA's chart above.

No minimum in the year you open the RRIF

The CRA requires minimum payments every year after the year the RRIF is set up. The year you open it, there is no minimum withdrawal at all.

Older plans differ

A RRIF set up before 1993 ("qualifying RRIF") or before March 1986 uses different factor columns at some ages. This calculator uses the chart's "all other RRIFs" column, the normal case for anything opened since 1993.

Withholding

The minimum amount itself has no tax withheld, but it is still taxable income. Anything you withdraw above the minimum is withheld like an RRSP withdrawal, at the rates on the CRA's Tax rates on withdrawals page. RRIF withdrawals also count toward the income test for the OAS clawback.
